Rose is a gifted thinker. As maid and servant to an overrated actress, she has a great deal of freedom to move around the colonial cities where her mistress performs.

She has both the ability and the opportunity to build a sophisticated understanding of society and her place in it. She knows the limits she faces, but she makes the most of every bit of freedom her unusual position allows.
