The Grandpa

He is keenly aware of how differently the generations see the world. Over a long life, his choices have led him to the comfort of a small community on tiny Cuttyhunk Island.

He is a man of strong values who wants his family to understand that we are all caretakers of nature. If we do not respect nature, especially the sea and the air, we will suffer untold consequences. His goal is a modest one: to show those closest to him how to face tough decisions, and to “see what others do not see, learn what others do not learn, and tread lightly on history.”

Grandpa’s challenge

Can he find the moment in the story that will reveal its lessons to Laurel, and to the reader?

For today’s reader

Older people can find real meaning in passing on what their own experiences have taught them.
